A message from our founder

Hello,

I am Jan, the founder of ‘Fluent in Maths’. Many students struggle with confidence in mathematics, and as exams approach they are under time pressure and stress. I understand the learning journey of students, especially those who feel they must rely on themselves as much as they rely on their school. This is because, in my own life, I mostly relied on home schooling to pass exams and gain entry to my chosen university programme.

My family lived in Africa, moving between villages while I studied for my O and A levels. I wanted to  earn a degree in a Mathematical discipline at a British University but there was no school nearby that taught the British curriculum. So I enrolled in a  ‘distance learning’ service based in Oxford. There was no internet in our village, so my study material would arrive by post and I would post back my answers for grading. This took weeks. Today the online maths quizzes I have created for fluent in maths, provide instant feedback!

I can empathise with your child’s challenges in acquiring self-discipline and making the best use of study time. Through regular study on the distance learning programme, I passed the British O and A level exams  with distinctions in Mathematics and Further Mathematics. It helped that my father is a Mathematician and was at hand to talk to. Every learning journey needs a guide.

I went on to read Mathematics and Computer Science at my chosen University, the University of Manchester, graduating at the age of 20 with a first-class degree. I then earned a Masters in Applied Mathematics from Imperial college and an MBA from INSEAD, whose MBA programmes has been ranked among the top 3 in the world by the Financial Times.

I had previously taught mathematics and computing at Brockwood Park school in Hampshire. So when INSEAD launched their online education programmes in 2016, that combined one-to-one coaching with video tutorials and online quizzes, I was excited to be involved. I have since personally coached over 600 students at INSEAD. I suddenly realised that my early experience of mathematics self-study could be amplified with technology to help other learners and so the ‘Fluent in Maths’ learning approach was born. It incorporates in-person teaching and regular online, text book and mock-exam practice.

Maths is a family passion. My father, who has been a teacher and private tutor in London for over a quarter of a century, tutoring 100s of students from the leading public schools in England, is part of my team.

Mathematics is an essential skill that lies at the heart of many exciting careers. In my own life, I have put my mathematics into practice as a quantitative analyst at some of the world’s leading investment banks and as a teacher.

For parents: I know how much effort you, as a parent, put into ensuring your child is best equipped for the future. I look forward to helping your daughter or son, towards confidence and exam success in the best possible way and of course, success in their choice of university and in life.

With best wishes

Jan
